Law enforcement to focus on select corridors, Friday, July 7th
The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office will be joining law enforcement statewide throughout July who are participating in an extra speed enforcement and awareness campaign. As part of this effort, we are also participating in the Highways 14, 19, and 60 Border-to-Border (B2B) Speed Saturation on Friday, July 7th. Watch for us as we strive to keep Minnesota roadways safe for travel for everyone.
Speeding continues to be a leading cause of death on Minnesota roads. The extra enforcement, coordinated through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety, and supported by local law enforcement, will help stop this dangerous driving behavior.
While getting a ticket may be a primary concern when exceeding the speed limit, drivers should worry about far more dangerous consequences:
- In 2022, 129 motorists died in speed-related crashes (preliminary).
- During the 100 deadliest days in the past five years (2018-2022), preliminary numbers show that 231 people lost their lives in speed-related crashes.
- Speed contributed to an average of 85 deaths per year from 2013-2017 but an average of 122 deaths per year from 2018-2022.
Our hope and desire is that every driver operates their vehicle safely, driving the posted speed limit and adjust speeds to the conditions, but if drivers do not, we will take appropriate action to help keep this a safe summer on our roadways for everyone. Your safety, and saving lives, is our deepest concern.
