Learn about the Family Acceptance Project
Supporting LGBTQIA+ youth in Olmsted County
Olmsted County Public Health Services is excited to share the Family Acceptance Project (FAP) with our community. This important initiative helps families support their LGBTQIA+ children. Every child should have a loving and supportive family. This project offers tools and guidance to help make that happen for families in Olmsted County.
FAP uses research to show how family acceptance can protect LGBTQIA+ youth from health risks and help them feel better about themselves. Studies show that when families reject their LGBTQIA+ children, it can cause serious problems, like mental health issues, suicidal thoughts, and substance abuse.
In Olmsted County, 23% of teens identify as non-heterosexual. Reports indicate that 40% of non-heterosexual Olmsted County teens have experienced moderate to high levels of emotional distress compared to 13% of heterosexual teens. They have additionally had higher rates of seriously considering suicide at 45% as compared to 15% for heterosexual teens.
When families are accepting of their LGBTQIA+ children, it can improve the child's self-esteem, mental health, and overall well-being. By sharing FAP with Olmsted County, we hope to create a more supportive community.
Website resources and poster campaign
Olmsted County residents can find helpful resources on our FAP webpage. Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, religious leader, or someone who wants to help, FAP provides easy-to-understand advice on how to support LGBTQIA+ youth.
Olmsted County is also launching a poster campaign around the county to share the message of family acceptance. Posters are available in multiple languages and will be displayed throughout the county through the end of the calendar year to teach family members, community leaders, and LGBTQIA+ youth about the importance of family support. Residents may see the posters in local restaurants, convenience and grocery stores, schools, and clinics. The goal is to show how family acceptance can prevent serious health risks and help LGBTQIA+ children lead healthy, happy lives.
