Coming January 30, 2024 - New 924 area code added to 507 area code region
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission is adding a new 924 area code to the geographic region of the 507 area code (this region covers southern Minnesota including Olmsted County). This area code overlay takes effect January 30, 2024 and residents will begin using a new dialing procedure to complete calls on that date. Residents with a current 507 area code will not need to change their area code – just how they make calls moving forward.
New dialing procedure
All calls in the 507 area code currently dialed with seven digits will need to be dialed using 10 digits (area code + 7-digit telephone number). The same dialing procedure will apply to both 507 telephone numbers and those assigned in the new 924 area code.
Effective dates
- January 30, 2024: Dial the area code + phone number whenever you place a call. If you forget and dial just seven digits, your call will still be completed.
- July 30, 2024: You must dial the area code + phone number on all calls, including calls within your same area code. If you do not dial the area code + telephone number, your call will not be completed.
- August 30, 2024: New telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the 924 area code.
Other items of note
- You can still just dial three digits for: 911, 988, 411, etc.
- Local calls are still considered local regardless of how many digits are dialed.
- Update your personal and pet ID tags to ensure the area code is included.
