Participate in National Voter Registration Day!
Register on September 17, 2024
As National Voter Registration Day approaches on September 17, 2024, Olmsted County and the City of Rochester encourage all eligible residents to register to vote. This annual event, observed across the United States, is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of voter registration and encouraging residents to participate in the democratic process.
Why registering to vote matters
Voting is a fundamental right and responsibility for every eligible resident. By registering to vote, you have a say in local, state, and national elections, which shape the policies and laws that impact your daily life. Whether it’s electing leaders or deciding on key issues, your vote is your voice.
How to register
Registering to vote in Minnesota is easy! Olmsted County residents can register in one of three ways:
- Online: Visit the Minnesota Secretary of State's website to complete your registration online.
- By mail: Download and print the voter registration application from the Secretary of State's website. Fill it out and mail it to the Olmsted County Elections office at 2122 Campus Drive SE, Suite 300, Rochester, MN 55904.
- In person: You can register at your polling location on Election Day! Please visit MNvotes.org for registration requirements and a list of documents you can use as proof of residence on Election Day. You can also register Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Olmsted County Elections office.
Check your registration status
If you’re unsure whether you’re already registered, you can check your status online through the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website. It’s important to verify your registration, especially if you’ve recently moved or changed your name.
Automatic voter registration
In 2023, Minnesota passed a law for Automatic Voter Registration. Now, eligible Minnesotans are automatically registered to vote or have their voter information updated when they apply for or renew a driver's license, permit, or state ID. Previously, applicants had to "opt in" by checking a box; now, they are registered unless they choose to opt out.
Spread the word
Encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to register and vote. Let’s ensure every eligible voter in Olmsted County is ready for Election Day!
