Sheila Kiscaden announcement – Stepping down as District 6 commissioner at end of 2024
On April 16, 2024, Olmsted County District 6 Commissioner Sheila Kiscaden announced to colleagues and members of the media that she is stepping down from the position at the end of 2024. Commissioner Kiscaden will make a formal announcement during the April 16, 2024, Olmsted County Board of Commissioners meeting.
The following is a statement and video message from Commissioner Kiscaden.
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Perhaps only fellow elected officials can truly understand the depth of meaning when I say that serving in the Olmsted County Board has been an honor and privilege. While these words may seem commonplace to some, we recognize the profound responsibility entrusted to us by the voters of our districts and the broader community.
As many of you are aware, my intention was to retire in 2022. However, upon learning of the impending retirements of four County Board members, I felt compelled to seek re-election to assist with a smooth transition. Now, as the transition period draws to a close and the County Board is functioning well, it is time for me to step down.
I will be vacating my seat on the Board representing District 6 at the end of 2024. By announcing my resignation now, the Board can choose to schedule a special election to align with the year’s election cycle for all other offices. Opting for this approach will not only eliminate the need for a separate election, thereby saving the County unnecessary expenses, but will also ensure the candidates for County Commissioner District 6 will have the same filing period, primary, and general election dates as all other candidates. The person elected to the district 6 seat will then take office in January like all other elected officials.
It has been an incredible journey serving on the Olmsted County Board for the last 12 years. I have cherished this chapter of my long career. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our community and to the Olmsted County organization.
With gratitude for your friendship and support and with hope that our friendship continues to find a path forward as my time in elected office ends.
Best personal regards,
Sheila Kiscaden
Olmsted County Commissioner, District 6
