Olmsted County extends food scrap drop-off program through 2025
ROCHESTER, Minn. – In June 2024, Olmsted County implemented an innovative food scrap drop-off program for residents interested in composting food waste.
After five months of successful operation, participants were given the opportunity to provide feedback. More than 90% of survey respondents indicated they would like to see the program continue. Based on program interest and participant feedback, the program has been extended through December 31, 2025.
Anyone interested in participating in the food scrap program can purchase a kit online at www.olmstedwaste.com. Kits can also be purchased during business hours at 2122 Campus Drive SE in Rochester.
For $25, the food scrap composting kits offer everything you need to get started:
- 26 BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) certified compostable bags offered in 2.5-gallon and 4-gallon sizes.
- Easy-to-follow instructions.
- Tips on reducing food waste.
- Access to the drop-off location.
Participants will drop food scraps off at the Olmsted County Recycling Center Plus (OCRC) during normal business hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Green RU will provide composting services. Green RU is an Olmsted County licensed hauler specializing in source-separated organics and currently serving local businesses. Through this food scrap drop-off program, Green RU has already collected and composted over 6,400 pounds of food scraps.
By joining this program, residents are not only helping the environment but also sharing valuable feedback to help shape the future of organics recycling in Olmsted County.
