Tour the Olmsted Waste-to-Energy Facility on April 26, 2025
Part of EarthFest activities

On Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Olmsted Waste-to-Energy Facility (OWEF) will be hosting an Open House as part of EarthFest activities in the community. This is a unique opportunity for participants to learn how the OWEF uses garbage to produce energy for buildings on the Olmsted County District Energy System.
The event will provide insights into how the county's integrated solid waste management system protects the environment in our local Karst geologic setting. Visitors will be taken on a guided walking tour through multiple levels of the OWEF, learning about the Recycling Center Plus, Hazardous Waste Facility, Yard Waste Compost Site, and Kalmar Landfill, and how they work with the OWEF to manage waste comprehensively.
This tour is appropriate for all ages. An adult must accompany children. Stair-climbing is involved; however, an elevator is available as needed. Casual attire is recommended. Sturdy shoes (no flip-flops) are required.
The OWEF is located at 301 Energy Parkway NE in Rochester, just down the street from the Recycling Center Plus.
Additional details are available on our Environmental Resources webpage.
