Completion of sustainable roofing projects on county buildings
Olmsted County is proud to announce the completion of roofing projects on the Government Center building (which began in the summer of 2023) and the 2117 Government Campus building (which began in the fall of 2024). These improvements represent a significant step forward in the county’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, as outlined in its climate action plan.
Both roofs now feature reflective white rock surfaces, designed to reduce heat absorption and help mitigate the urban heat island effect. This roofing solution not only enhances energy efficiency but also aligns with the county’s strategic priority of environmental sustainability.
Additionally, the Government Center building now has several solar panels, a key component in Olmsted County's transition to renewable energy. These panels will generate clean electricity, offsetting a portion of the building’s energy use and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
“These projects are part of Olmsted County’s strategic plan to adopt sustainable practices and invest in infrastructure that benefits both the environment and our residents,” said Olmsted County Director of Facilities and Building Operations Mat Miller. “The addition of solar panels and reflective roofing materials demonstrates our commitment to a greener, more energy-efficient future.”
“The roofing upgrades reflect Olmsted County’s dedication to long-term cost savings through reduced energy consumption and a cleaner environment,” said Olmsted County Physical Development Division Administrator Tony Hill.
Olmsted County extends its gratitude to the contractors, engineers, and staff who contributed to these successful projects.
