How to apply to become a family child care provider
Family childcare is a rewarding and demanding profession. A family child care provider may be the most important influence in the lives of children, after their parents and/or guardians. The way providers care for children and guide their growth will be a part of shaping their future. Olmsted County has over 300 licensed family child care providers.
Do you need to be licensed?
People who provide childcare in Minnesota must have a license from the Department of Human Services. It is a misdemeanor to provide childcare without a license. Under Minnesota Statute 245A.03, Subd.2, there are two exceptions to this rule:
You may provide unlicensed care for children who are related to you and children from one single unrelated family.
You may provide unlicensed childcare for a cumulative total of fewer than 30 days in any 12-month period.
